Well it's been a long break for us, canceling more trips then i could imagine. After going stir crazy for weeks and taking care of the minor repairs from that **** Sandy, we made it out for blackfish today.
We had Mark and his crew, Glenn and his crew and Murray today. Trip was to find some Stripers in the morning then tog. Well with knowing the bass bite is terrible, I told the guys we were going straight to tog. Then I found out they were all first timers, except Murray. But that did not matter what so ever. First drop with no wind and a nice current, shorts right away with a keeper or two. After resetting 10 times due to the wind making its way over 180 degrees we were catching some fish. Some good flurries here and there pretty much most of the day. Most fish were 14.5", so if I was last year, we would have had a double limit. Made another drop farther to the northwest and the keeper ratio was much better. Played here for a bit until the end of the day with the south wind whipping away as usual.
We ended the day with only 16 keepers to around 4lbs with countless fish from 14-14.75". Bent the rods most of the day. And I gotta give to the guys, they did one hell of a job figuring out the blackfish game. They each did very well considering the scratchy bites and tough conditions. Nice job and thanks again guys! Another cancelled trip tomorrow due to high winds. BS. Back out Sunday.
Ran a last minute open boat trip, due to a charter cancellation the night before. Headed to all the local blackfish drops we normally fish. Made about 12-15 drops for the day and only had 2 shorts to show with only ONE other bite! Hurricane Sandy really put a beating on the bottom fish.
Today we had Murray, Dave, Ed and Mike for stripers. Went right to where we have been catching. Arrived in the dark and immediately marked the bait everywhere. Knew it was gonna be game on. As the sun was rising, there it was screen lit top to bottom with bass. Jigs in, and only 2 blues! Had same readings a dozen more times only to catch a thousand blues. Moved southeast and the bass were up top all over the place. Put a few in the boat there. Then every boat from the northeast arrived like Mosquitos and it was over. Moved inshore. H myself and picked a couple more. Headed towards home and got another on some insane readings. Tons of blues today, too many to even think about having an estimated count. The bass, wtf? Something was up with those suckers today. Read em all day long only to pick 6, and also losing a bunch close to the boat. But with the readings, it shoulda been game over by 10am. Still, good fishing, lots of catching. The guys had fun and we called it an early day around 1:45pm. Had our 6 STRIPERS and a half a dozen blues for the smoker. Thanks again guys!
Today we had Aj, Jim, Tj and Matt out for STRIPERS. Left at I dark thirty and headed to where we have been catching. Looked at some marks for a bit but only blues before full light. Moved around and found the MOTHERLOAD of STRIPERS. Game on, 6 fish on at a time. Awesome jig fishing once again. Totally destroyed them today. Had a full boat limit with a tag by 9am. Played c&r for a bit till the guys have up. Then hit the tog. Again another tough blackfish bite. Had a bunch of shorts and 2 nice keepers. Called it an early day and headed home. Thanks again guys. Way to put a beating on them!
Ran open afternoon trip last minute today. Not much to report today. Headed out at 1:30pm and it was non stop insane-o bass jigging for 5 hours. Some blues mixed in but was an awesome time for everyone. Everyone had their limit plus releasing a bunch too. Had fish to around 25lbs. It all broke up before dark and the guys called it quits. Kept 11 STRIPERS and 5 BLUES. Great afternoon, thanks guys!
